    More Katie video
I owe some words here, really, about how I'm feeling and what's going on. In a nutshell, I'm feeling ok, and nothing too different is going on, although there is the exciting news that my brother and his girlfriend are now the proud parents of a baby girl named Olivia, born yesterday! I'm an aunt!

So hopefully I'll feel like writing more soon, but for now, here is a Katie video with belated Valentine's Day greetings. (It wasn't belated when it was taken - it was actually taken on Valentine's Day.) She's cuter than I am, anyway.

    Tuscan Bread Soup!
This recipe is in the latest issue of Cook's Country magazine. I don't do a whole lot of cooking these days, so I can't really vouch for how easy this particular recipe is, but Geoff made it, and he says it is easy. And I can definitely vouch for how DELICIOUS it is. Yum!

Tuscan Bread Soup - serves 4 to 6

4 slices crusty Italian bread, 1.5 inches thick
4 T extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
    1 large onion, chopped
    6 garlic cloves, minced
    6 cups low-sodium chicken broth
    1/2 cup heavy cream
1 t. minced fresh thyme (or 1/2 t. dried - or, if you prefer, 1/4 t. minced fresh rosemary)
    salt and pepper
    1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

    1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 475 degrees. Place bread slices on baking sheet, brush tops with 1 T. oil, and bake until golden brown and crusty, 8 to 10 minutes.

    2. Meanwhile, heat 3 T. oil in Dutch oven (we don't actually have a Dutch oven, so Geoff used a large pot) over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add onion and cook until lightly browned, 8 to 10 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add broth, cream, and thyme and simmer until onions are softened, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

    3. Cut bread into 1 inch chunks and place in soup bowls. Ladle soup over bread, sprinkle with Parmesan, and drizzle with olive oil. Serve.

Let me know if you make it and like it!

    Merry Christmas to you
I'm officially on vacation now, and feeling much better. I don't go back to work until January 2nd. My mom is here, and she and Katie are having a great time together. Mom and I went shopping last night, and she bought several things for Katie. I only have a few more presents to buy (no matter what happens I see to always end up with a few things I have to get at the last minute), and our place is relatively clean (maybe not relative to the rest of the world, but relative to our usual state). And when else could I have taken 4 vacation days and gotten 10 consecutive days off work? No other time, that's when!

I just wanted to say MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone who celebrates those, and happy holidays or "have a good weekend" to those who don't. Oh, and happy solstice - it really does make me feel happy to know that the days are getting longer again, because they are too damn short right now - it got dark last night around 4:30.

I don't know how often I'll be posting here, and I hope those of you who've recently been added to my friends list aren't disappointed in what you find - there may not be as much cuteness or general well-being as there is at the other site, for the very reason that often if I'm writing here, it's because I want to write about somethat I need to keep private. Often, but not always, that means I'm not feeling great! But I wanted to welcome you all, and thank you for wanting to read what I have to say.

    I'll write more soon.

Katie's First Year (also posted on typepad)

Another little movie, this one much higher on the sap factor than the last one was. This one is a compilation of short clips taken through Katie's first year, so you'd think I might have put something like it together, say, around the time Katie turned one. But I think in this case, at least for me, better late than never is really true.

(I posted this one on both Vimeo & Youtube - and I also went back and posted the ball-yations video on Vimeo. To see this one on Vimeo, go here.)

    Katie talks about the ball-yations.

This video is too dark, and the fan we use to make white noise in her room overnight is going the whole time, but still. She makes me laugh. (And this is my first attempt at editing video, adding audio and text. I'll get better!)
